How to ask so it comes out right

Read on today's tide

We practised these calls with made-up villagers. Here is what worked, and what went wrong.

  1. Say which part, then the exact words, slowly. "Change my tagline to: Fresh lei strung at dawn, ready by eight."
  2. Ask it to read the words back. Listen to every word. In practice it heard "freshly strung", read that back, and the caller said yes. A wrong yes is saved as is.
  3. Spell Hawaiian words. "Lauhala" was saved as "La Hala". Spell any word that must be exact, letter by letter.
  4. One change at a time. Wait for "filed" or "done" before the next.
  5. After "one moment", wait. The answer can take a few seconds. If you talk over it, you can miss it.
  6. Not sure? Ask "Did you file it?" It will tell you.

Your agent may not offer the read-back by itself yet. Ask for it every time.
